A. Maize apices containing five leaf primordia fail to initiate any new leaves when cultured for seven days in 35 mM NPA. A total of five leaves were present after seven days in culture.
B. In contrast, dissected apices containing five leaf primordia develop eight additional leaves when cultured for seven days in the absence of NPA. L = Leaf#, P = plastochron# as described.
